Choosing to become a KARI carer is a big decision, which ultimately leads to a wonderfully rewarding experience. Here’s how you can help change a child’s life for the better, forever.

We’re always looking for quality Aboriginal foster carers who have a passion for providing outstanding care for Aboriginal foster children. KARI offers professional support to all our Carers, while they provide a child or young person in need with a loving home, care and support.

Why Aboriginal carers are needed

In NSW alone, there are more than 20,000 children and young people living in foster care placements. Aboriginal children account for around one third of that total – a shocking statistic given Aboriginal people make up just over three per cent of the entire population.

Types of care

Respite

A respite placement is considered to be between two to 28 days.

Short-term

A placement may be required for any length of time, from one month up to two years. This type of placement is generally dependent on the court system and whether restoration to birth family or kinship placement is an option.

Long-term

A long-term placement is required when Family and Community Services have assessed all family options and believe it’s in the child’s best interest to remain in care up until the age of 18. Should the parent wish to demonstrate they have the capacity to begin caring for their child again, they can take the matter back to court at any stage throughout the long-term order.

Kinship

Kinship is when a child has family members who are willing to take on the full-time care of the child, when they’re unable to live with their parents. This is managed by Community Services and KARI will only be involved if Community Services has a specific need – such as assessing a family’s capacity to care for another child, or working together for the smooth transition of a child to the family.

Carer support

We offer the following support to our KARI carers:

Dedicated caseworker

All KARI carers will be assigned a caseworker to offer you support and guidance on any given placement. They’ll visit you a minimum of once a month to ensure the child’s needs are met while in your care, as well as supporting you in your important role as carer.

Training

KARI is committed to ensuring that its carers have the opportunity to participate in ongoing training programs. KARI facilitates a number of in house training programs such as Triple P, Behaviour Management and Life Story Work Scrapbooking. KARI also forward all training opportunities provided by Connecting Carers which facilitate training sessions all over NSW.

Fortnightly allowance

All foster Carers will be provided with a fortnightly allowance, scaled with regard to age and the level of care required, to help cover the costs involved with providing quality care for the child in your care. It’s paid per child and isn’t considered to be a taxable income, so it won’t affect your tax or earnings if you are working.

24-hour support

KARI has a 24-hour phone support service, so should a crisis arise, you won’t have to manage it alone.

KARI Cultural Unit

What are the next steps?

Deciding to become a foster carer will change both your life, and that of a child in need, forever. It’s a wonderfully rewarding experience and KARI staff will be there to support you and your family throughout the entire fostering process.

Information Session

Two KARI staff members will come to your home to explain a bit more about KARI, while outlining the next steps of the process. The goal of the session is to ensure you have all the information and support available to make this very important decision. After this meeting, you can decide if you’d still like to pursue becoming a KARI carer.

Assessment Process

This process will be carried out over a number of visits to your home, where two members of staff will assess things like your motivation, your availability, your experience, and your living arrangements.

Training

Potential Carers are expected to complete a two-day training workshop. KARI utilises ‘Our Carers for Our Kids’ training package. In NSW, all Carers will also be required to undergo a number of checks prior to becoming an authorised carer:

  • Working With Children Check
  • National Police Check
  • Community Services Check
  • House Safety Check
