In late November, KARI Singers’ Program Directors Blake Ralph and Sarah Bertram, took a team to visit Dubbo NSW to provide a variety of vocal workshops to budding, local performers. Two workshops were held over the course of 2 days at Yarradamarra Centre, Dubbo TAFE.
The workshops provided students with an opportunity to learn more about their craft as well as their culture. The workshops covered basic vocal technique, stage presence and movement as well as work on cultural and group songs including Yothu Yindi’s ‘Djapana’.
The aim of this program was to identify a small group of young Indigenous performers from regional NSW that will have the opportunity to travel to Sydney in January 2020 for a special performance alongside the current KARI Singers cohort.
“We had a great turn out at both workshops and were able to educate the students on how to achieve the best outcomes with their voice, as well as how to adapt them when performing as a group. It’s great to be able to bring this program to areas like Dubbo and we can only hope to continue doing so in other parts of regional NSW” – Blake Ralph, KARI Singers Program Director
KARI Foundation are looking forward to expanding this program and hope to reach other areas of regional NSW, in order to provide similar opportunities to youth in these areas.
