KARI offers a wide range of cultural experiences, from keynote speakers and on-Country learning, to workshops in Yidaki (didgeridoo), weaving, carving, and Traditional Indigenous games. We also support organisations with Reconciliation Action Plans and culturally appropriate guidance.

All sessions are delivered by First Nations facilitators in a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment.

KARI Cultural Workshops

KARI Cultural Workshop

This specialised series of workshops is crafted to provide insights into the historical and contemporary dimensions of Aboriginal culture, customs and traditions.

It aims to illuminate practices imposed on Aboriginal peoples post-colonisation and how intergenerational experiences shape our communities today. Additionally, it seeks to cultivate a profound admiration for the diverse tapestry of Aboriginal traditions spanning over many thousands of years.

Modules Include:

Aboriginality

Aboriginality and the diversity within Aboriginal culture and communities, we also provide strategies on how to best work with Aboriginal clients and communities.

Traditional Tools, Weapons and Artefacts

Talk and demonstration on traditional tools, weapons and artefacts. The items have been hand crafted and provide understanding of what goes into traditional tools used for survival.

Impacts of Colonisation

This module gives participants an insight into historical aspects of the Australian Governments past policies and practices and a deeper understanding of how inter-generational trauma continues to effect Aboriginal people and communities today.

In our weaving workshop participants will learn the ancient practice of weaving which is a tradition that has been passed on through generations.

Yidaki
Workshop

Participants enjoy a unique experience in our one day workshop where they learn the origins of the instrument and make a quality Yidaki that they will be able to take home, play and display.

Participants create and carve their own piece of traditional art using techniques that have been successfully used and passed down by Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years.

On Country Experiences

Camps

On country cultural camps can be tailored to your group and range from two/three nights visiting a number of sites and communities in the Nambucca shire on Gumbaynggirr country.

Your group could experience the below:

  • Traditional Gumbaynggirr welcome to country with smoking ceremony
  • Gumbaynggirr language workshop with creation stories
  • Engaging with respected elders and knowledge holders
  • Learn about Songlines
  • Visit cultural centre and gallery
  • Screen printing tee-shirts
  • Visit significant sites and learn about how Gumbaynggirr people migrated within tribal boundaries
  • Spear fish in the pristine fresh water ways of Bellingen or Bowraville
  • Group size of 10 participants
  • Each participant will receive a KARI hat and water bottle.

Bush Walks

Experience Country closer to home with this fantastic opportunity tailored to your group. Explore local flora and fauna and their traditional uses, ancient rock art, and historic swimming holes.

Your group could experience the below:

  • Guided walk through culturally significant landscapes
  • Learn about traditional bush foods and medicine
  • Explore rock art sites and their cultural meanings
  • Learn about seasonal indicators and the bush calendar

Offered in three beautiful locations around Sydney:

  • Royal National Park
  • Ku-ring-gai National Park
  • Blue Mountains National Park
  • Group size of 10 participants
  • A moderate level of fitness is required.
  • Each participant will receive a KARI hat and water bottle.
