KARI’s Leaving Care Team delivered a Driving Program in partnership with Birrang Enterprise during the 2018 January school holidays.
The program was offered to the young people in KARI’s Out of Home Care (OOHC) to support them in obtaining their learner’s licence, followed by driving lessons with an instructor to assist them in logging the hours required to then go on to obtain their provisional license.
There was a great response to the program with 22 participants signing up. Five of these participants were community referrals from KARI’s Brighter Futures Program.
During the first three days of the program, these young people trained for the questions they would be asked when they sat the test for their learner’s license.
They then completed the practice computer test until they were confident to sit the formal test at Service NSW.
After obtaining their learner’s license they were provided with driving lessons with a qualified instructor, which meant that for the first 10 hours of driving they completed with an instructor they were able to claim 30 out of their required 120 hours.
So far five of the participants have successfully obtained their learner’s license with others due to sit their test in the coming weeks.
Over 60 driving lessons have been provided to these young people so far with one participant preparing to sit their Hazard Perception Test to progress from their learner’s license on to their provisional license.
