As the school year comes to an end, children in Year 6 are busy preparing for the transition from primary school to high school. This experience can often be daunting and stressful for children, and can also place a financial burden on families as the formative high schools require a broader range of equipment for students.
As a way of helping to ease the transition for Year 6 students and their families, working together with the Schools Services Directorate, Department of Education, KARI provide students in Sydney City regions with a “Transition to High School” backpack. This backpack contains the following equipment:
- Cultural artwork design backpack and matching pencil case
- Stationery
- A4 Visual Art’s Diary
- All subject books including maths grid book and music book
- Maths protractor set
- Scientific calculator
These backpacks are available to every Aboriginal child enrolled in a Department of Education school in 2020 within specified regions. They assist families and students in making the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 a successful one.
Backpacks were distributed across multiple locations over a period of two weeks. Many teachers, parents and students left excitedly with their backpacks, knowing how much of a difference they would make for their students and children.
With increased demand in communities as close as Western Sydney and into Regional NSW, the KARI Foundation are seeking to source additional funding to expand our community reach.
