One of our most successful adaptions to our programming this month was our April School Holiday Vacation Care program.
During a time when a number of our teams have excursions and incursions available for young people in our programs and broader community to attend, the team had to get innovative.
Community Programs offered a free Cultural Activity Book Pack that saw over 250 resources distributed to families across the South West Sydney region.
In addition to an 80 page cultural colouring and activity book, young people also received a number of hands on activities including:
- Make your own bird activity to coincide with the Dreamtime story of How the Birds got their Colours
- Make your own ‘Always was Always will be’ bracelet
- Scratch art boomerang and animal
- Sand art kits
- Paint kits
Posted to our social media channels, the packs were incredibly well received with all 250 being allocated in less than 2 days! Staff then had the task of delivering the packs to excited young people across locations from Liverpool, Campbelltown, Bankstown and Fairfield.
Our Cultural Unit delivered didgeridoo, art and weaving packs to our young people in care. To ensure program delivery continued, the team facilitated workshops online via Zoom Video Conferencing. It was a great way to ensure that our young people stay connected to each other, our staff and their culture.
The Brighter Futures Team delivered art and at home, activity packs to families for young people at home. The packs also included some great at home activities that could be completed as a family, such as baking cakes. The team also ran an art competition for the young people with winners receiving show bags, delivered to their homes.
Overall, our team worked exceptionally hard to ensure that we could still put smiles on the faces of families and young people these school holidays.
Feedback from community, families and carers was resoundingly positive with families sending in photos and messages to thank the team on a job well done.
“Just wanted to say a huge thanks for the art packs my daughter absolutely loves it!”
“What a wonderful idea. Thank you for your ongoing support for our children’’
“Deadly idea! Great work as always KARI”
