July was a busy month for the Greater Western Sydney Opportunity Hub, with the team connecting with students, schools, families and community members through culture, celebration and sport.
The Hub was proud to join NAIDOC celebrations at Evans High School and Colyton High School. At Evans High School, the day began with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome, followed by cultural dance performances from students and a community barbecue. Celebrations continued at Colyton High School, bringing students, staff, families and community members together to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements.
On Wednesday 29 July, students from five schools supported by the Opportunity Hub, Windsor, Colo, Richmond, Hawkesbury and Riverstone, participated in the Mob Oz-Tag Gala Day at Western Sydney University’s Hawkesbury campus. The Opportunity Hub team supported and cheered on the students throughout the day while also running a popular inflatable activity. The event created an opportunity for students from across the participating schools to connect, work together and enjoy a day of friendly competition.
The following day, Opportunity Hub students proudly participated in Sir Joseph Banks High School’s NAIDOC Assembly. Recognising 50 years of NAIDOC under the theme 50 Years of Deadly, students spoke about the importance of NAIDOC Week and celebrated the histories, cultures, strength and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The students performed the Brolga Dance and the Dhinawan Dance for the school community. The assembly concluded with a presentation of gifts before students, staff, families and guests came together for morning tea.
These events created valuable opportunities for young people to connect with culture, celebrate their identities and share knowledge across generations. They also highlighted the important role schools play in creating culturally safe spaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities feel seen, valued and proud.
For the Greater Western Sydney Opportunity Hub, participating in these activities is an important part of building strong relationships with local schools and communities while supporting opportunities for culture, connection and community leadership.
