Happy New Year! Can you believe January is already behind us? Time flies when you’re having fun, and the KARI team certainly packed a lot into the first month of 2025. From connecting communities, to life saving (and even a visit to the world’s largest natural blowhole!), here’s everything we’ve been up to this month!
Mums & Bubs Camp: Strengthening Bonds
We kicked off the year with our highly anticipated Mums & Bubs camp, bringing together 6 Mums & 17 Bubs of all ages across the Southwest Sydney region. It was an unforgettable experience filled with community building, parenting workshops, and cultural activities not to mention the thrill of recreational fun like kayaking! Facilitated by our Early Intervention Team, this camp was all about empowering mums and fostering meaningful connections in a supportive environment.
Cultural Camp on Yuin Country
Our Cultural Unit travelled to the beautiful Yuin Country, where we had the honour of meeting respected knowledge holder Uncle Les McLeod. Attendees got hands-on with cultural workshops and activities, learning about their heritage in a deeply engaging way. One of the trip’s highlights? A journey to Kiama to witness the majesty of the world’s largest natural blowhole! These moments of learning, connection, and exploration will surely stay with everyone for years to come.
Gwonggubunga Vacation Swim Programme: Splashing into Safety
Meanwhile, our Queensland Community Programs Team made waves on the Gold Coast with the Gwonggubunga Vacation Swim Program. This life-saving initiative taught kids essential water safety skills, from navigating pools and creeks to mastering beach safety. They even brushed up on CPR and first aid! Parents were blown away by the programme’s impact: “Both of my girls came away with so many positives and feeling so much more confident,” said one grateful parent. Another added, “Mob teaching mob I couldn’t be more thankful.” Huge kudos to the entire team for their dedication!
YABUN: A Day of Connection and Celebration
Wrapping up the month, Team KARI joined the vibrant celebrations on Gadigal land for YABUN. Our inflatable spear-throwing activity was a hit, with kids of all ages joining in for a chance to win prizes. It was incredible to see so many faces come together to celebrate culture, resilience, and community.
Looking Ahead
As January fades, we’re gearing up for even more incredible initiatives. Stay tuned for updates on everything KARI has planned for the year ahead, we’re just getting started!
