In July, a group of standout participants from KARI’s Young Leaders Program travelled to Darwin for an unforgettable cultural experience on Larrakia Country.
The annual trip recognises young people who have demonstrated commitment, personal growth and leadership throughout the program. It also gives them an opportunity to step outside their everyday surroundings, embrace new experiences and see more of what is possible for their futures.
Regardless of which Nation their mob comes from, spending time on Larrakia Country allowed the Young Leaders to connect with Country in a new way while exploring a place rich in culture, wildlife, history and life.
During the trip, the group experienced Darwin’s remarkable landscapes, swam in beautiful waterholes, encountered local wildlife and watched magnificent Top End sunsets. Each activity brought a sense of adventure, but some of the most meaningful moments came from experiencing these things together. Travelling as a group encouraged the young people to support one another, strengthen friendships and step outside their comfort zones. Through new challenges and shared experiences, they continued building the confidence, resilience and connection at the heart of the Young Leaders Program.
Reflections shared by the young people following the trip captured their excitement, joy and appreciation for the experience. While their identities remain private, their words offer a powerful insight into what the journey meant to them and the memories they will carry forward.
The annual Darwin experience is about much more than travel. It broadens horizons, strengthens cultural connection and reminds young people of their capabilities and the opportunities ahead. KARI is incredibly proud of this year’s Young Leaders and the commitment they have shown. We look forward to seeing them continue to grow as confident young people, positive role models and future leaders within their families and communities.
