KARI Foundation proudly sponsored the Illawarra communities first ever Debutante Ball, held at the Fraternity Club, Fairy Meadow on Friday 8th November. The group consisted of 6 males and 6 females, who were each partnered with a Police Officer from the Wollongong and Lake Illawarra Local Area Commands.
Debutante Balls are a great initiative to strengthen the relationship between the Indigenous community and their local Police. The night consists of the group debuting to the community with their partner, followed by a group dance performance. These events are not possible without the support of the local Police command, as well as supporting partners.
Families and friends were invited to celebrate with their debutante after formalities ceased, allowing everyone to reflect on their accomplishments.
“This event is another perfect example of how Police can work in a positive way with our community; we know it works. The engagement of 6 male youth is commendable; a sight not often seen in an urban community, and has set a great example for how we can continue to work together to break barriers and forge positive relationships” – Lauren Drayton, Manager of Community Programs
KARI Foundation hope to see the Illawarra community hold its Debutante Ball annually and reach the same positive outcomes the KARI Limited Debutante Ball has achieved over 8 successful program years; for more information on the 2020 KARI Limited event, contact the Community Programs team on (02) 8782 0300.
